Earlier this year, Erasing the Distance performed at Grimes Middle School. Grimes is located on Chicago's southwest side, near Midway Airport, and a large percentage of the student body (about 75%) are Hispanic.
Many of the issues we covered in that performance resonated with the students (7th graders) and their daily experiences. We talked about issues such as depression, substance addiction, domestic violence, self-injury, eating disorders, and suicidal feelings.
We are thrilled to announce that Grimes will host Erasing the Distance in a longer term residency program beginning this month, so the students will have a more robust opportunity to give voice to their experiences and get support and education.
Students will have the opportunity to set their own goals for the residency, along with hands-on leadership by our Artistic Executive Director Brighid O'Shaughnessy. The residency will also include collaboration with Certified Art Therapist, Danniel Anthon. (We'll introduce Danniel and get to know him and what his does a little better in next Tuesday's post!)
We look forward to working with the 7th grade students at Grimes, and we applaud the school's principal Judith Carlson, Eve Jankowski and the counseling department, and all of the staff for partnering to address the mental health needs of Grimes' students.
Wishing you a healthy day,
~ Oriana @ Erasing the Distance
