Five Questions with Oriana Fowler

Our company's fiscal year draws to a close at the end of this month, and Oriana Fowler (blog writer and staff member) is working on a year-end newsletter to share successes, stories and faces from this year at ETD.
To help you get to know this person who is often behind-the-scenes, today Oriana answers the "Five Questions" series!

Five Questions with Oriana Fowler
ETD Collaborator since October 2008

1. What is your role with Erasing the Distance?
I am the Communications Director at Erasing the Distance, one of three staff members. I manage online and print communications, including the e-newsletter, and help with marketing, sales, events, and whatever else is needed.

2. When you are not working with ETD, what might you be doing?

I might be working with The Neo-Futurists, doing freelance social media work, or... enjoying summer in Chicago!

3. Can you share with us your favorite ETD moment?

Recently, I attended the performance at Al Raby High School, where students performed their own stories and stories they had collected from their community, as the culmination of a three-month residency. I was incredibly moved by the students' courage and the supportive environment for honest dialogue.

4. What do you think is a pressing mental health need in your community?

Just one? Hmm. I think my community would benefit from understanding the effects of stress and practicing better self-care. Another big one is affordable services, and de-stigmitizing mental illness even within the medical industry. The fact that health care discriminates against people with pre-existing treatment for mental illness is outrageous.

5. Can you tell us your favorite way to de-stress?

Going for a walk, making time for myself. Connecting with a friend does wonders for my mental health. And dancing!
