NAMI-Walks & Erasing the Distance

On Sunday ETD participated in the NAMI 5k to raise funds and awareness about mental illness. Our ensemble member Jen Mathews wanted to share her experiences and thoughts on the event with us today.
Here is what she had to say...

"Sunday was a great day for Erasing the Distance. We had a booth in Grant Park as part of NAMIWalks - a 5K walk sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and we had many ETD members participate. We wore our new Erasing the Distance T-shirts proudly as we watched Executive Director Brighid O'Shaughnessy wow the receptive crowd with a performance from our signature show, The People I Know.

Then we headed out for our walk - and some of us even chose to jog it! Our very own Stephanie Diaz finished her first ever 5K with a victory, crossing the finish line first with her fiance, Erik. Go, Steph! So now ETD has a race win under our belt. Even though it technically wasn't a race, and most people treated the walk more like a stroll, Who cares? We're still gonna revel in our victory.

Life's full of disappointments, so I think we should all celebrate every success that comes our way. And Sunday, sharing time and energy with a passionate group of mental illness supporters 1,000 people strong was a definite success. I, for one, am CERTAINLY celebrating that."

Thanks Jen! ETD was proud to be an active presence at the walk. We met some wonderful people, and felt moved by the show of support for mental health awareness. The folks at NAMI did a wonderful job with the event. We look forward to seeing you there next year!

  1. Great job to everyone who participated! By the way, the bulk of this attractive-looking crew crossed the finish line first out of the 1,000 or so who attended (they 'cheated' by running).
